DAMN

Well, "DAMN". That's the latest record from Kendrick Lamar. I've mentioned him before. It's worth mentioning him again (and again and again). Listen, even if you don't like rap; even if you think it's money-seeking angry black men (what rock have been hiding under?); you OUGHT to give this a listen. In fact listen many times - you'll need to, in order to get it all. His messages are DENSE, to say the least. Is this just my opinion? NO. The Pulitzer Prize was given to Kendrick this year, and no wonder why. THIS MAN IS A TRUE GENIUS. So are many rappers - check out Jay-Z's TRIPLE ENTENDRE. Jay-Z ended that passage with "Don't Ask Me How" - indeed! Look, I have tried, hard, to come up with a triple entendre (and I'm very smart), but no luck yet. Oh, and Jay-Z's is particularly clever, since it includes street-talk. 😒

A well-known, very clever triple entendre:

A ranch is named by it's owner: 'FOCUS' RANCH. Then the owner retires. He named it 'Focus', because its where:

(a) The Sun's Rays Meet.   ...   and its also where:

(b) His Son's Raise Meat.

If you get what's going on there, then try to make up your own. You might, but I kinda doubt it.

Thank God life fell apart. At least I get this second chance. "Make more mistakes more quickly" was the advice in Canadian designer Bruce Mau's 'manifesto' - not currently on the bmd site, that I can see. Born 1961. I'm a committed Buddhist. A committed musician. A sometimes committed loony; the friendly type. I'm very smart. Not very wise. Not very pretty.

I met Hunter Tura years ago at some conference, and I've always admired his work - and certainly the company/person he work(s)ed for ...  Bruce Mau may still be in Chicago , but I'm sure he's a good mentor.  I believe Hunter is now CEO & President @ BMD . A recent post finds Hunter "excited" to be part of the team who will design Hong Kong airport's new mega-terminal . Nice! Who IS Bruce Mau ?  Many Canadians may well ask.  Because, many Canadians do not realize that one of this world's finest designers is, in fact, Canadian.  THAT's Bruce Mau .  As to who Hunter is, well, he's the next rising star, and amply filling Bruce's shoes, it would seem.  Good job all round, people, and keep it up - you make this Canadian very proud.  If YOU want to feel equally proud, do follow the above links, and especially, gaze at BMD's work here . Glad They Are There (A Series): Rheostatics

Did I already do Rheostatics .? I don't care. I'll do them as many times as I want, and since 1992, I've done just that. They've been a Toronto fixture for more than 30 years now, and only barely getting the credit they've ALWAYS deserved. Just a killer, progressive, heavy, krauty, art-rock folk-pop kind of thing. Maybe. Sometimes I think they're all things to all people. Those who listen, anyway. Oh, one thing - theres decidedly no "The" in their name, which makes it awkward to refer to them sometimes. Rheostatics are my favourite band. Along with Radiohead and several (hundred) others. You can turn to the Rheos for almost any mood, but its always musical, and always with character. And they are terribly Canadian. Came up on small-town tours. And abroad. Magical album pair: Melville and Whale Music . But ALL worthwhile. New Music from ... 1997

Music I wrote, recorded (all tracks), and published in 1997. It's from what people tell me is my "best" album (Storm Animal - an anagram of Martin Lomas). I disagree; my fave album is "Loose" (all electronic & algorithmic). But "Loved By A Queen" is a decent song that may well be resurrected for The Garden Distrikt, or even sold to a name musician/singer.

New Music from 1998

Only 20 years old - a mere spring chicken, here's - "Hair of the God" 1998 Music by Martin Lomas, words from "The Eye of the Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran as read by Johnny Cash. All of the guitar tracks were created by sampling my own work at half-speed. Why? Serendipity. I had some recordings of mine on cassette tape. These were made on the typical TASCAM PortaStudio unit (see below), which uses the tape at double-speed to improve quality. I wanted to revive them, and so planned to re-record them digitally, double the speed (since I no longer have a double-speed tape deck), and clean them up. But I got stuck at the half-speed stage. Some wonderful new sounds become available.

Musings - (1) THINK.

( Note:  Be aware that the following was completely ad hoc, and as I write this sentence [in chunks], I am also editing this post in three other places, and creating two other new posts. I have an interesting brain. ) I'm going to take a big risk here. I am absolutely determined to reveal the truth about myself. When I put the truth on display to strangers, they are typically interested and engaged, and eventually, left behind. When do I the exact same with anyone that knows me, they almost always assume that I am merely having a mental health moment. I have indeed been diagnosed a couple of times in the past (different things), yet I always feel that I'm the sanest person in the room. The previous sentence isn't strictly true - I have met saner people. But those that know me are not saner people, that I know of. This bit may be more "radical honesty" than love. She's been my guru for maybe 15 years now - though she doesn't know it - yet*. This documentary, with the lovely Bill Moyers , will tell you much about her, AND, much about Buddhism. But remember, we don't proselytize. Well, in general we don't, but me, I'm a radical Buddhist . So there. Here's the doc ... sorry about the poor video quality, but the sound is good.
